Luke did a great job and was very flexible and understanding of our needs. He listened and was very helpful in explaining answers to our questions. I would highly recommend his work.

Luke was on time, considerate upon entering the house, and has a pleasant, friendly manner. He also gave excellent advice and suggestions/options for solving the problem, without "pushing" for one or the other. NEXTPOINT Electrics is to be highly recommended.

Luke at NextPoint was fantastic. Arrived on time both times he's done work, texted first to say he was on his way. Very quick, efficient and tidy with both jobs and a great guy to deal with. Highly recommend and will definitely use him again.

Electrician Thomson FAQ

Do you actually cover Thomson?

Yes. It is a short run across for us from Ocean Grove, with no distance loading on it. There is no call out fee and no distance loading.

Which parts of Thomson do you cover?

All of it, the whole 3219 postcode, and the neighbouring towns with it. The whole of it, and nowhere in Thomson is far enough from us to be worth charging you extra for.

How quickly can you get to Thomson?

It is a short run across for us from Ocean Grove, with no distance loading on it. We do not promise a set response time, but you get a straight answer on the phone and a time on the day rather than an all day window.

Is there anything particular about the housing here?

Two things, and both are unusual. Thomson was created outright by the State Housing Commission, which built around 410 dwellings from the late 1940s and reported the estate fully built by 1953, so the original stock is tightly grouped in age. And at the 2021 census more than half of all households here were renting, the average household was 1.9 people, the smallest of any suburb we cover, and over 27 per cent of dwellings were units or townhouses. So a lot of the work here is in small attached dwellings rather than family houses, and often for a landlord rather than an owner.

About Thomson

Thomson was named in the late 1940s after Dr Alexander Thomson, an early Geelong settler and the town's first mayor. It was detached from East Geelong around 1950, the year its post office opened.

It exists because of the State Housing Commission, which developed a residential estate here from the late 1940s, built approximately 410 dwellings and reported the estate fully built by 1953. The Thomson Progress Association was still lobbying for improvements through the mid-1950s.

Education arrived next. A technical school opened in 1958 and became a campus of the Gordon Institute of TAFE, and the suburb now holds the Gordon's East Geelong campus along with East Geelong Primary School, which dates back to 1857, and James Harrison Secondary College. The TAFE campus includes student accommodation.

The population has not grown since 2006, sitting around 1,600 across roughly 920 dwellings. At the 2021 census about 69 per cent were freestanding houses and over 27 per cent were units or townhouses, more than half of all households rented, and the average household was 1.9 people. It is a small, dense, largely rented suburb rather than a family-house one.

The practical version for a Thomson owner: if the house dates from the Commission estate and the board has never been changed, it is at the age where that becomes the first job.

If you are a landlord here, safety switch protection and compliant smoke alarms are the two worth confirming rather than assuming, and they are cheaper to do between tenancies.
