What the work covers
Switchboard Work We Do Most
From one safety switch added to a board that is full, to the whole thing out and replaced. Priced before anything starts.
Ceramic fuses to circuit breakers
Rewirable fuses out, breakers and RCBOs in. The old ones give no fault indication and rely on somebody having the right fuse wire at midnight.
Adding safety switches
Where the board has room and a sound earth, protection can go on the circuits most likely to hurt somebody without replacing the whole board.
Meter box repair and replacement
Along the beachfront the enclosure is often the problem before the board is. Rusted hinges, a door that will not close, water in the bottom.
Boards with asbestos backing
Common in boards of a certain era. It does not automatically stop an upgrade, it changes how the job is done, and you are told before anything is touched.
Making room for what is coming
Solar, an EV charger or air conditioning all need capacity. Much cheaper to plan for once at the board than to retrofit three times.

You ring and describe it
What is on the board now, how old the house is, and what you are planning to add. Most switchboard jobs can be priced from that.

We confirm on the day
We look at the board, the meter box and the earth before anything comes out. If it is different from expected, you hear the new price first.

Power off for the day in most houses. Every circuit identified and tested as it goes back on. Anything we find gets shown to you, not quietly reconnected.

How long will my power be off?
Plan for a working day. Some boards are quicker and a few are slower, and the difference is usually what is found once the enclosure is open rather than the board itself. You will get a realistic estimate at quote stage, and if the day is going to run longer than expected you will hear it while there is still time to do something about the freezer.
Can you upgrade the board without touching the wiring in the walls?
Yes, and that is what most upgrades are. The board and the cabling are two separate questions. A new board gives you modern protection on the circuits you have. It does not change what those circuits are made of. Where the cable itself is the problem, that is rewiring, and it is a much larger job. Part of quoting an upgrade is telling you honestly which of the two you have.
Do I have to upgrade before adding air conditioning or an EV charger?
Not automatically. It depends on whether the board has a spare protected way and whether the supply can carry the new load. Both get checked before you are quoted for the new circuit rather than after. Where an upgrade is genuinely needed first, you will be told why, and if you are planning several additions it is almost always cheaper to do the board once.
Is a ceramic fuse board actually dangerous?
The short answer: a rewirable fuse protects the wiring from overload, which it does adequately, and it does nothing to protect a person from electric shock. A house on ceramic fuses is a house with no safety switches, and that is the gap worth closing, whether or not you replace the whole board today.
