Can I have safety switches without replacing the whole board?
Usually yes, and it is the most common version of this job. Whether it is possible comes down to space in the enclosure and the condition of what is already there. Where there is room, protection can be added to the existing board. Where there is not, or where the board is in poor condition, an upgrade is the better value even though it costs more, because you are not paying twice for access.
How many do I need?
That depends on how many circuits you have and whether you want one device per circuit or one covering a group. The answer starts with looking at your board and counting what is actually there, which is why a photo of the board with the door open answers most of the quote. What matters more than the count is the list: you should know which circuits are covered.
My safety switch trips whenever it rains. Is it faulty?
Usually not. It is usually doing exactly what it should, because water has got into something outdoors and current is finding a path it should not. Outdoor points, garden lights, pool equipment and old external fittings are the common culprits. The practical answer is to isolate the outdoor circuit and get it looked at rather than resetting it through every shower.
Do safety switches wear out?
They can, which is exactly why the test button exists. They are mechanical, they sit in a hot box on an outside wall, and on this coast they sit in salt air as well. A device that has never been tested in fifteen years may or may not still work, and there is no way to know from looking at it. Test quarterly, and if one does not trip when tested, replace it.
