How do I tell whether my fan is ducted outside?
From inside the room you generally cannot, which is why it gets missed. The two checks you can do yourself: go outside while someone runs the fan and look for air coming out of a wall vent, an eave vent or a roof cowl on that side of the house, and hold a sheet of toilet paper against the ceiling grille to confirm the fan is pulling at all. If the fan pulls but nothing is coming out anywhere outside, the air is going into your roof. That is the one to ring about.
Can you duct an existing fan without replacing it?
Often, yes, and it is usually the cheaper job. If the fan itself is sound and there is a spigot on the housing to connect to, the work is in the roof space: duct, supports, and a termination through the wall, eave or roof. Whether it is worth doing depends on the age of the fan, because if it is near the end of its life you are paying for access twice. We will look at both and give you the two numbers rather than deciding for you.
Why does my bathroom still get mouldy with the fan on?
Four usual reasons, in the order we find them. The fan is not ducted outside. The duct has sagged or come off. The room is sealed so tightly the fan has nothing to pull. Or the fan runs for two minutes after a fifteen minute shower and stops before the room has dried. A run-on timer fixes the last one cheaply. The first two need someone in the roof space to see what is actually connected.
Are heat lamps expensive to run?
They are a genuine load while they are on, typically a few hundred watts per lamp, so a four-lamp unit is over a kilowatt. The saving grace is how they are used: nobody leaves them on all day, and in Geelong you want them for a few weeks a year rather than a season. We will not put a running-cost figure on your page, because that depends on your tariff and your habits, but the honest summary is that they cost real money by the hour and very little by the year here.
