Can I just buy LED globes and put them in myself?
For a lamp that unplugs or screws into an existing fitting, replacing the globe is not electrical work. Downlights are different, because in most older installations the fitting and its transformer are wired in rather than plugged in, and changing those is licensed work. If your downlights have a plug-in lamp that comes out by hand, that part is yours to do. If the fitting itself is coming out of the ceiling, it is ours.
Why do my new LEDs flicker?
Most often a dimmer that was made for halogen loads and is now driving a much smaller LED load, which it cannot control smoothly. Sometimes it is a mismatch between the lamps and the driver, and occasionally a genuine wiring fault such as a shared neutral. The first two are solved by choosing dimmer and lamps together. The third is worth ringing about, because a flicker that affects more than the lights on that switch is not a lamp problem.
Can insulation go back over the new lights?
Only if the fittings are rated for it, and that has to be decided when the fittings are chosen rather than afterwards. It is worth asking for, because the gaps pulled around old halogens are usually the weakest part of a ceiling's insulation. If you already know your roof insulation is patchy around the existing lights, say so when you ring and it will be quoted with the right fittings in it.
How many downlights does a room need?
Fewer than the halogen era suggests. Because each old fitting threw a narrow pool, rooms from that period often have more fittings than the light output justifies today. The honest answer needs the room size, the ceiling height and what happens in the room, and it is a five minute conversation. What we will not do is quote the same number back because that is what is up there now, without saying whether it is right.
