Surge Protection Geelong

Most surges are not lightning. They come from the network when supply is switched, and from inside the house when a motor stops. Both are far more common than a strike, and both are what protection is actually for.

What the work covers

Surge Protection Work We Do Most

Two layers doing different jobs, and both of them depending on an earth that actually works.

Switchboard surge protection

The first layer, at the board, taking the big hit before it gets into the house wiring.

Point of use protection

The second layer, at the equipment worth protecting. Different job from the board device, not a replacement for it.

Checking the earth first

Surge protection dumps energy to earth. If the earth is not sound the device has nowhere to put it, so that gets checked before anything is quoted.

Homes with solar

More electronics on the roof and in the garage than most houses had a decade ago, and all of it on the same installation.

Homes with an EV charger or heat pump

Bigger connected loads and more control electronics. Worth protecting once rather than replacing twice.

After a storm or an outage

If equipment has already been lost, the protection question is worth asking before you replace it all.

Lost equipment in a storm, or added solar or a charger? Ring and describe your setup. Most of it can be sorted on the phone.

How we work

Our Process

  1. You ring and describe it

What is on the board, what you are trying to protect, and whether you have solar or a charger.

  2. We confirm on the day

We check the board space and the earth before anything is fitted. If it is different from expected, you hear the new price first.

  3. We fit and test it

Device fitted, earth verified, everything tested and the board labelled.

  4. Guaranteed for life

Our lifetime workmanship warranty covers the installation. If our work is not right we come back and put it right at no charge.

On every job, no exceptions

Surge protection questions

Asked most often

Is a surge board from the hardware shop enough?

For the thing plugged into it, a decent one is genuinely useful and much better than nothing. What it cannot do is protect anything it is not plugged into, which means every hard wired appliance in the house is outside its reach: oven, cooktop, air conditioning, hot water. That is the gap a device at the board fills. The two work together rather than competing.

Will it stop lightning damaging my house?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is overselling. A direct strike is beyond what any domestic device is designed for. What surge protection handles is the far more common case: the spikes that travel along the supply during and after storms, and the ones generated inside the house by motors. Those account for the great majority of the equipment damage people actually experience.

How long does a surge device last?

There is no fixed lifespan, because it depends on how much it has had to absorb. Each event uses some of its capacity, so a house that has taken several serious storm seasons will get through them faster than one that has not. Most devices have a status indicator, and checking it after a bad storm takes a second. If yours has changed state, it has done its job and needs replacing.

I have solar. Does that change anything?

It adds electronics on your roof and an inverter that represents real money, so there is more to lose. It also adds another path into the installation. If you have solar and are considering surge protection, mention it when you ring, because where the device goes and what it needs to cover is affected by how the solar is connected.

Do you cover my suburb for surge protection?

Yes, anywhere within a short drive of Ocean Grove, including Drysdale, Leopold, Curlewis, Queenscliff and everywhere else on the service areas page. Acreage properties on long private runs are worth a conversation, because the supply arrangement differs.

Still deciding? Ring and tell us what you have got, and we will tell you what it needs.
