How fast will a 7 kW charger actually charge my car?
As a rough guide it adds in the order of 30 to 40 km of range an hour, so overnight covers far more driving than most people do in a day around the Bellarine. The exact figure depends on your car's onboard charger, the part inside the vehicle that sets the ceiling. Some models cap at 7 kW, some higher, a few lower. Check that specification before paying extra for a bigger unit, because a charger cannot push more than the car accepts.
Can I keep using the cable that came with the car?
Yes, that is legal. Plug it straight into a wall socket, never into an extension lead, a double adaptor or a power board. If it is your everyday method, it is worth having a dedicated outdoor rated power point put in near where you park, on its own circuit, so hours of charging are not sharing with the fridge and the washing machine. Plenty of people run that way for a year, learn how much charging they really need, then decide about a wall charger.
Do I need to upgrade my switchboard or my supply?
Often not. We look at whether there is room in the board for a new circuit, whether there is residual current protection, and what your main switch and incoming service can carry with the rest of the house running. If the total is tight, load management is usually the answer and it costs less than a supply upgrade. If the board is old, on rewirable fuses or has no safety switch, that gets fixed rather than worked around. You will know which one yours is before you commit.
Can I install the charger myself?
No. A wall charger is fixed wiring on a dedicated circuit, and that is licensed electrical work. The circuit, the protection and the connection at the switchboard all have to be done under licence and tested. You can buy the charger yourself and have us install it, and plenty of people do. Send the model number through before you buy and we will tell you what it needs and whether your board can take it.
Do you install chargers outside Ocean Grove itself?
Yes, anywhere within a short drive of Ocean Grove, which takes in Drysdale, Torquay, Wallington, St Leonards and Queenscliff. Send a photo of your switchboard and a photo of where the car parks when you ring. Those two photos answer most of what we would otherwise need a site visit for.
