There are only about 767 private dwellings across the whole of Moolap, a locality that runs from Corio Bay to Reedy Lake, and the median age at the 2021 census was 59, the oldest of any suburb we cover. Around five per cent of dwellings were recorded as something other than a house, flat or townhouse, which is unusual and consistent with a rural-industrial area. Practically that means low density, long driveways, sheds, and properties where the distance from the meter to where you want the power is the main variable.

About Moolap
Moolap takes its name from an Aboriginal word for Point Henry, thought to refer to men gathering to go fishing, and the area is the country of the Bengalat balug clan of the Wathaurong. The railway to Queenscliff came through in 1879 and transformed the locality.
Salt is the industry that defined it. The Cheetham Saltworks were established in 1888 by the manufacturing chemist Richard Cheetham across roughly 500 hectares, and were Victoria's first successful solar saltworks, with evaporation pans, basalt sea walls and a dedicated tramline to the railway. They were a major regional employer through the twentieth century and closed in the late 2000s. The pans are now recognised bird habitat.
The other one was aluminium. Alcoa's Point Henry smelter began construction in 1960 and reached full production in April 1963, with a capacity of 185,000 tonnes a year and around a thousand people employed across the smelter and the adjoining rolled products mill. Power to the main line was cut in July 2014 and the site closed at the end of that year, with decommissioning completed in 2021.
What is left is a large, low-density locality. About 767 dwellings, some 90 per cent freestanding houses, no apartments at all, and the oldest median age of anywhere we work at 59. The former Moolap Primary School on Moolap Station Road, a weatherboard rural schoolhouse of 1877, still stands and is still in community use.
The practical version for a Moolap owner: on a large block the distance from the meter to where you want power is the thing that decides the job. It is worth measuring rather than estimating.
