Can I install my own oven if it has a plug?
If the appliance is supplied with a plug and there is a suitable point already in the cabinet, plugging it in is not electrical work. What is not acceptable is fitting a plug to an appliance that came without one, or wiring a point in to suit. If the appliance has bare cable, or the point is not there, that part is licensed work. When in doubt, send a photo of what is behind the old one.
The retailer says installation is included. Is that the same thing?
Sometimes, and it is worth reading closely. Some retail installation covers connecting an appliance to an existing, adequate, compliant connection and nothing else. If your circuit is undersized, the isolation switch is missing, or you are coming from gas, that is usually outside what was included and gets discovered on the day. It is not a trap, it is just a narrower scope than most people assume.
I am switching from gas to induction. What is involved?
Electrically, this is the biggest of the changes on this page, because a gas cooktop needs almost nothing and an induction one needs a proper circuit of its own. Expect a run from the switchboard to the kitchen, a check that the board has room and capacity, and an isolation switch. Whether the run is easy depends on the house, the same way a new power point does. Get it looked at before you buy.
Can the oven and cooktop share a circuit?
Sometimes, and it depends entirely on the two appliances' ratings and the existing cable. A modest oven and a small cooktop can share. A large pyrolytic oven and a full-width induction cooktop usually should not. The answer comes from the numbers on the appliance data plates rather than from a rule of thumb, which is why the model numbers are the first thing we ask for.
