Does being this close to the water change anything?
Outside, yes. Salt in the air corrodes metal, and it does not need to be sea spray to do it. Outdoor power points, light fittings, switchboard enclosures and the screws holding them up all age faster within a few streets of the water than they do inland. What fails is usually the fixing or the seal rather than the fitting itself, and once water gets past a perished seal you have a fault waiting to happen.
The answer is not exotic, it is specification. Enclosures rated for the exposure, stainless fixings instead of whatever came in the box, glands and seals that are actually fitted rather than left loose. It costs very little more at installation and it is the difference between a fitting that lasts and one you replace in three years.

About Ocean Grove
Ocean Grove sits 19 km south east of Geelong at the mouth of the Barwon River, joined to Barwon Heads by the bridge and facing Bass Strait on the other side. It is the largest town on the Bellarine Peninsula and it is where NextPoint Electrics is based, which makes it the shortest drive we make and the suburb we get to fastest.
Being coastal changes the outside of a house more than the inside. Anything mounted in the open, outdoor power points, garden and sensor lighting, meter boxes and switchboard enclosures, sits in salt air year round, so it gets specified for that rather than treated as an afterthought. What fails is usually the fixing or the seal rather than the fitting itself, and once water is past a perished seal you have a fault waiting to happen.
Inside, the housing tells you which decade you are standing in. The oldest streets sit behind the foreshore on the original town grid. A large slice of the town went up in the building boom through the seventies and eighties, and that is the housing where we see ceramic fuses, no safety switch, and a board with no room left on it. Then there is nineties and two thousands brick, and new builds still going up on the northern edge with everything to current standards. A switchboard from 1985 and one from last year are completely different conversations, and we have both on the same street.
The practical upshot for an Ocean Grove homeowner: if your house is from the boom era, the switchboard is the thing worth looking at first, and anything you mount outside is worth specifying properly the first time.
