It changes the practical side more than the electrical side. Highton runs over the Barrabool Hills, so blocks are often stepped, driveways climb, and the distance from the street to the back of the property can be a good deal longer than the frontage suggests. That matters for cable runs to a shed, a pool or a studio, and for how long it takes to get gear to where it is going. None of it is difficult, it just wants knowing before the quote rather than after.

Highton takes its name from John Highett, who built a house on a hill above the Barwon River in the 1830s, and Highett-town shortened over time. It stayed small for a long while: a few hundred people through the nineteenth century and only around 750 by 1947, a number that included the residents of an orphanage.
What it is now was built from the mid-1950s onward. Schools arrived through the 1960s, the shopping centre in the mid-1960s, housing reached the Glastonbury Drive area in the 1990s, and building has continued north of Barrabool Road and west of Scenic Road in recent years. By the 2021 census the population was over twenty thousand, the largest of the Geelong suburbs we cover.
That spread matters electrically. Seven decades of construction sit side by side, so there is no single answer to what is in the walls. A mid-century house, a 1980s brick house and a recent build are three different conversations, and Highton has all three within a few streets of each other.
The other distinctive thing is what is not here. At the 2021 census close to nine in ten dwellings were freestanding houses and essentially none were flats or apartments, with the balance townhouses and units built more recently. This is a suburb of houses on their own land, on hilly ground.
The practical version for a Highton owner: work out which era your house belongs to before you plan anything substantial, because a mid-1950s house and a 2015 house have almost nothing in common at the board.
If you are running power down to a shed, studio or pool on a sloping block, the length of the run is worth measuring properly. On a hill it is usually longer than it looks.
