More than people expect. The heritage review of this area records the majority of houses as single-storey timber, mostly built between the 1880s and the 1920s, and notes it is not uncommon to find an 1860s house next door to an 1890s one in the same street. Timber construction and a century of small alterations mean the wiring in two houses that look alike from the footpath can be nothing alike inside. That is an argument for looking rather than assuming.

Geelong West grew as a working suburb. Land sales began in 1839, it was renamed Geelong West in 1875, and it was a borough, then a town, then a city before being absorbed into Greater Geelong in the early nineties. Donaghy's Rope Works opened here in 1873 and an iron foundry in 1886, and an electric tram ran up Pakington Street from 1912 to 1956.
The housing reflects who lived here. The heritage review records a marked shift from masonry to timber through the nineteenth century, and notes that a major proportion of houses in Geelong West today are timber, because timber was the cheaper build for a predominantly working class population. Cottages, Edwardian and Federation houses and Californian bungalows dominate, with brick arriving mainly after the Second World War.
It was also built piecemeal rather than in estates. The 1986 conservation study observed that it is not uncommon to find an 1860s house beside an 1890s house in the same street. Allotment frontages run from roughly ten to twenty metres and street widths vary from about nine metres to eighteen.
Since the 1980s a great deal of it has been renovated. That is good for the houses and complicated for the wiring, because a period cottage that has been restored once or twice usually carries work from several different decades at once, and the oldest of it is rarely the part anyone thinks to check.
The practical version for a Geelong West owner: in a timber house of this age, assume there are layers. A restoration that touched the kitchen and bathroom often did not touch the run feeding the back half of the house.
If you are planning something substantial, the narrow frontage is worth raising early. Access is usually solvable, but it is better solved before we are standing in the driveway.
