Waurn Ponds has a long history and a short suburban one. There were inns here from the 1840s and 50s, a school from 1859, and David Pettavel planted vineyards from 1848 that gave the district the name Pettavel through the 1860s. Limestone was quarried here from the 1840s and the lime kilns ran until the 1970s.
For most of the twentieth century it stayed rural. The population was around 150 in 1966. The turning point was Deakin University, which enrolled its first students at the Waurn Ponds campus in 1977, and the residential development that followed, which did not really begin in earnest until the early 1990s.
The result is one of the newest housing stocks of any suburb we cover in Geelong. At the 2021 census over 97 per cent of dwellings were freestanding houses and none at all were recorded as flats or apartments. The median age of residents was 27, the youngest of the Geelong suburbs on our list, which the university explains.
