About North Geelong
North Geelong has a hotel and general store recorded by 1854, a church from 1861 and a state school from 1877, and the railway came through in 1857. The station opened in 1883 as West Geelong and was renamed North Geelong in 1886.
Industry shaped it from the start. The Geelong gas works ran here from around 1858 to 1971 with its own rail connection to the ports, a timber mill opened in 1908, and the Federal Woollen Mills were built from 1915, employing large numbers making uniforms during the First World War. The former mill at 13 Mackey Street is on the Victorian Heritage Register and described as the most intact of the Commonwealth's defence supply factories. Osborne House on Swinburne Street, built in 1858, housed the Royal Australian Naval College from 1913 to 1915 and is now the maritime museum.
The port is still here and it is substantial: Corio Quay with its woodchip and break bulk berths and the Spirit of Tasmania berth, Lascelles Wharf handling fertiliser, clinker and grain, the grain pier, and rail yards north of the station with a grain loop built in 1981 that can unload a whole block train without shunting.
The housing sits alongside all of that. Wikipedia records a construction surge from the 1950s through to the early 1970s, and at the 2021 census about four dwellings in five were freestanding houses with most of the rest attached units and townhouses rather than apartments. The rental share was above forty per cent.
The practical version for a North Geelong owner: if the house dates from the post-war surge and the board is original, that is the first job rather than the eventual one.
