About Bell Post Hill
The name is thought to come from a lookout post, or a warning bell on a post or forked tree, set on the prominent rise overlooking Corio Bay and the Moorabool River. The earliest documented reference goes back to an incident in 1837.
The building that anchors the suburb is Morongo, a two-storey stone homestead of 1859 on that rise, on the Victorian Heritage Register. It became Morongo Presbyterian Girls' School in 1926 and the site was taken over by Kardinia International College in 1996.
Education is what shaped the place. Besides Morongo and Kardinia, the state primary school was established in 1960 and Covenant College opened in 1983, giving the suburb three schools. There was significant Southern European settlement here, particularly Croatian and Macedonian.
It is now fully built out. The population has barely moved since 2001, sitting around five thousand across roughly 2,200 dwellings, 92 per cent of them freestanding houses with a small flat component and almost no townhouses. Also here is the Cowies Creek rail bridge of 1860, a bluestone structure on the Geelong to Ballarat line, on the Victorian Heritage Register.
The practical version for a Bell Post Hill owner: if the house has been in the same hands a long while and the board has never been touched, that is the job to do first.
