Charlemont was gazetted in February 2012 out of land that had been part of Grovedale and Marshall, and the population went from 364 at the 2016 census to 2,612 at the 2021 one, roughly seven times in five years. Nearly 98 per cent of dwellings are freestanding houses and none are apartments. The median age is 29, the youngest of anywhere we work. So the wiring is new, safety switch protection is there from the start, and the work is almost entirely additions: chargers, second split systems, sheds, alfresco areas and pools on houses only a few years old.

About Charlemont
Charlemont is named after the Earl of Charlemont, a ship wrecked off Thirteenth Beach at Barwon Heads in 1853. Survivors took a route along what is now Charlemont Road to reach Geelong.
As a suburb it is barely more than a decade old. The Armstrong Creek urban growth area was gazetted in 2008, and in 2012 the growth plan was amended to create two new localities, Armstrong Creek and Charlemont, out of land that had been part of Grovedale and Marshall. Charlemont was gazetted in February 2012.
The growth has been among the fastest anywhere. The population was 364 at the 2016 census and 2,612 by 2021, across 1,065 dwellings of which about 92 per cent were occupied, the unoccupied share being what an actively building estate looks like. Nearly 98 per cent were freestanding houses and none were flats or apartments. The median age was 29.
The land has older stories under it. Sparrovale, now a 500-hectare wetlands reserve acquired by the council in 2019 and carrying the Wadawurrung co-name Ngubitj yoorree, was the Geelong racecourse in the late 1840s and hosted the first Geelong Cup in 1872 before the course moved in 1905 and the land became Sparrovale Farm. Iona College opened in the corridor and Yirrama Primary School opened in 2026. One estate here has streets named after characters and places from Game of Thrones.
