Outside, yes. Torquay is open surf coast, so it takes salt straight off the water all year rather than in bursts. Salt corrodes metal and it does not need to be sea spray to do it: outdoor power points, light fittings, switchboard enclosures and the screws holding them up all age faster here than they do inland. What fails is usually the fixing or the seal rather than the fitting itself.

About Torquay
Torquay is where the Surf Coast begins. It was a quiet holiday settlement called Spring Creek until it was renamed in 1892, picked up slowly through the twentieth century, and then changed shape entirely: the town grew toward Jan Juc from the 1970s and accelerated after the 1980s, and the estates that followed, The Sands, Ocean Views and the rest, put a large amount of new housing on former grazing land in a short space of time.
That history leaves a town with two quite different electrical conversations going on at once. Near the front beach and along the older streets there are beach houses and shacks that were built for summer use and improved piecemeal, where the question is what is actually in the walls and whether the board has anything spare on it. Out in the newer estates the wiring is modern and the question is capacity instead: what the switchboard will carry before a charger, a second split system or a pool goes on it.
The other thing about Torquay is the season. The population was 18,534 at the 2021 census and roughly triples across January. A house that sits empty for most of the year and then runs flat out with a full complement of people, appliances and visitors is being asked to do two very different jobs, and the faults that show up in the second week of January are usually things that were already marginal in June.
Exposure is as direct as it gets. This is open surf coast, so anything mounted outside is in salt air year round. Outdoor points, garden and deck lighting, meter boxes and switchboard enclosures all want specifying for that position rather than being treated as an afterthought. What fails first is almost always the fixing or the seal rather than the fitting itself.
The practical version for a Torquay owner: if the house is one of the older ones, the switchboard is the thing worth looking at first. If it is an estate house, the useful question is not whether the wiring is sound but how much headroom the board has left before the next thing goes on it.
If you let the place out over summer, the two that come up every year are safety switch protection and whether the smoke alarms are compliant. Both are cheaper and calmer to sort out in winter than in the week before a booking.
