There is, and it is unusual enough to be worth knowing. The Housing Commission built 2,464 houses here between 1947 and 1976, with the peak between 1951 and 1957, and over 1,200 of them were prefabricated units imported from Holland and France. Prefabricated construction is not the same thing as a conventionally built house of the same age, and what is behind the lining can differ from what you would expect. That is an argument for looking rather than assuming, and it is why we would rather open something up before quoting it.

Norlane barely existed before the Second World War. It had 347 people at the 1947 census and its post office had opened only in December 1945. It takes its name from Norman Lane, a local serviceman captured at Singapore who died on the Burma to Thailand railway in 1943.
What happened next was one of the largest housing programmes in the region. From 1947 to 1976 the Housing Commission of Victoria built 2,464 houses here, with the peak years between 1951 and 1957. More than 1,200 of them were prefabricated units imported from Holland and France. They were built for workers at Ford, International Harvester, a phosphate works, Shell and Pilkington Glass. In a decade the place went from paddocks to a working suburb, and the population reached 12,098 by 1971.
Ford is the reason. The plant on Melbourne Road, just south of here, was in production from 1928 and employed over five thousand people by 1953, making it Geelong's largest employer. It closed in October 2016.
The suburb is in a different phase now. The council's Corio Norlane Structure Plan describes a marked concentration of ageing public housing built from the 1950s onward, and the New Norlane project has been partnering with local builders to put newer housing on the ground. At the 2021 census close to one dwelling in seven was a townhouse or unit, a high share for a suburb of detached houses, and over half of all dwellings were rented.
The practical version for a Norlane owner: if your place dates from the Commission programme and the board has never been changed, that is where to start rather than where to finish.
If the house is one of the imported prefabricated units, say so when you ring. It changes how we approach the job and it is better known at the start than discovered halfway through.
